Cat Checklist: Things To Consider Before Getting A Cat

January 20, 2020

There’s no doubt that cats make wonderful pets. They’re great companions and bring a lot of joy to your life. However, a pet is for life, not just for Christmas, birthdays or any other occasion! Cats can live up to 20 years so this is a huge commitment.

If you’re thinking of getting a cat here’re some question to ask yourself…

Have I Got The Adequate Space?

It’s important you have enough space to put all the things that your cat will need. Cats like to have their things in separate places, e.g. food and water bowls need to be apart from each other. Their litter trays need to be far away from their food station. Also if possible, let them roam freely from room-to-room so they get used to the sounds and smells of their new home.

Can I Afford a Cat?

Be prepared for the financial responsibilities that come along with having a cat. You have things like food, snacks, beds, toys and accessories to pay for and there are also vet costs to consider. Oh and a scratching post or two for sure! They help to trim cats claws, keep them in proper shape and they are a great stress reliever. Plus it’ll save your furniture being used as a scratch post instead!

Do I Have The Patience?

You need to have a lot patience with cats. Your schedule will change to suit your cat’s needs, you’ll need to litter train them, they can be fussy with food, so you need to be prepared to try different flavours of food – the list goes on!

Will I Need To Cat-Proof My House?

Yes!

To love and care for a cat is a rewarding experience, they’re truly charming creatures. If you are prepared for the responsibility, this is a lifetime friendship that you’ll cherish forever.
